I shan’t be gone long, – you come too.
-Robert Frost
If we’ve been fellow adventurers long enough you’re well-acquainted with my position that the only way to improve an adventure is to add more adventurers. You’ve been on every one of our adventures. Even if your presence in the boat, on the trail or beside the fire hasn’t been physical we’ve taken you along. When one of those adventures has offered itself to the universe we’ve committed it, taking you along again.
For Frost the adventure at hand was cleaning the pasture spring. For us it could be…well, anything, but you come too. Here’s where we differ from the poet though. We very likely shall be gone long. How long? As long is it takes, fellow adventurers!
Deuce, sometimes I really don’t understand you. How long does it take?
I’m glad you asked! (Come on, you knew that was coming.)
I’ve been taken to task for not checking in with my contact person (you do have a contact person, right fellow adventurers?) until the wee hours of the morning after the day I was supposed to make contact. Other times trip mates, usually first-time participants in a day trip on the water, will thereafter advise other potential first-time trip mates to take a head lamp if they plan to go with me.
Then there are those trips when everything goes according to plan – such as it is – and it only takes the day.

Of course not all adventures go according to plan. Maybe someone has planned a four day float camping excursion on a raft, and maybe that someone has reached the put-in to discover the oars are five hours away, safely tucked in back at Arkansas Adventure Guide HQ. Maybe someone some day will recount that particular adventure. Maybe.

I shan’t be gone long, – you come too.
Okay Deuce, but you still haven’t told us how long it takes!
I hear you. You may not like my answer, but here goes.
It depends.
I can only speak for the Arkansas Adventure Guide crew, but when we set out on an adventure we know exactly what we’re looking for. We may be after a particular waterfall, a new rapid (or a rapid that got the best of us last trip and left us thirsting for sweet, splashy revenge) or that singular moment when a fellow adventurer first catches a glimpse of a sight we’ve known and loved for years. Regardless of the stated object of our pursuit though, what we’re really after is the deposition of another layer of memories to sustain us until it’s time for the next adventure. The time required to accumulate enough of them is how long it takes, and taking you along with us makes those memories even sweeter. So…
I shan’t be gone long (or perhaps I shall), – you come too.
See you out there!
