I hope you don’t think this trip report is cheating. I was just across the Oklahoma border, so strictly speaking it wasn’t in Arkansas. However, the Ouachita Trail stretches all the way to Pinnacle Mountain State Park in Little Rock, so I think I’m good to go. If you disagree; well, get your own adventure!
Little Deuce has been attending an annual event at Beavers Bend State Park since before she was able to drive. This year she was armed with a newly minted license and her own car, so rather than drive her I compromised and followed her to the park entrance then proceeded to dinner. The following morning I took the Talimena Scenic Byway (a worthy adventure on its own merits) to Talimena State Park and embarked on a short overnight hike to Deadman Gap.
The Ouachita Trail is a remarkable, well maintained trail with exquisite views, especially during leaf off, and varied and steep terrain.

One of the Many Vistas Along the Trail
Unlike their Ozark cousins to the north the Ouachitas are a thrust fault range. This means many different things to those with an intimate understanding of the geologic record. For the rest of us it means one thing in particular; rocks. So………many…….rocks – including on the trail. As a result travel is more arduous than one might expect, which brings me to my next point.

So…….many…….rocks
Like many Ouachita Trail hikes this one can be approached one of several ways; out and back, part of a loop, or point to point. Because I had somewhere to be I chose the point to point option and availed myself of a hiker shuttle service at the end, simply waiting at a prearranged location to be returned to the Arkansas Adventure Guide company truck. This is unusual for me, but it’s a great way to extend your trip without having to find additional time.

Another Excellent Trail Map from Ouachitamaps
Level camping spots can be difficult to come by, so if you’re after an overnight adventure it’s a good idea to consider in advance where you might want to stop along the way. Ouachitamaps (find them here) recommends ideal spots. I found a cozy bench with an amazing night view of Poteau in the distance.

Home Sweet Home
Grab your favorite trail shoes and a little bit of gear and enjoy an overnight hike on the Ouachita Trail.
See you out there!
